Your grandma has one, your mom has one and you probably have one too. It is the single most common piece of furniture found in homes today. No it's not a bed it is a wood kitchen table that you eat at every day. And you probably use it for other things too. Like a desk, a mail holder and even a laundry sorter.
Well before you return wood kitchen tables to their original purpose, eating, you need to give it a thorough cleaning. Because as they say; a clean kitchen table is a happy one. The first step is clearing all the clutter. Sort through that mail and other junk and toss what you don't need while putting what you do want to hold onto in its proper place.

Next, if you have the table completely clear wipe it down with a warm soapy rag and let it air dry completely. If you still have laundry on the table fold that and put it away, put loose papers in your file cabinet and take the dishes to the sink before you wipe the table down.
Once it is cleared, wiped down and dried you can grab an old toothbrush or cotton swab and use some elbow grease to really scrub the dirt out of any cracks or crevices. It is hard to believe how much dirt and filth lurks in these little spaces no matter how many times you wipe down your table.
Once you have these areas cleaned out it is time for another wipe down. Don't use anything harsher than soap on your wood kitchen tables as you might inflict damage on the poor thing unintentionally. Instead use an oil that will not only clean the table but polish it as well. Try something with orange or lemon oil and scrub until your wooden kitchen table gleams brilliantly. Now your table will look new again and the oil will help it stay cleaner longer. Even though you probably wipe down your table after every meal you need to use the oil just once every few weeks to retain that sparkling shine.
All it takes is these four easy steps to transform your wood kitchen tables from a universal dumping ground to the integral part of the heart of your home that it should be. It is said that the kitchen is the hub or center of your home. It is where you prepare and share good meals and good conversations. And wood kitchen tables are the one spot that brings everyone together, family and friends for good food and even better conversation. Without one how would you know that Johnny got an A in math and Jane is going out for track?
So keep your wooden kitchen tables happy; clean and clutter free and use them for what they were made for. You'll cherish the memories made around that table and be glad that it is not lost and forgotten under a pile of junk. In fact if you care for it enough your wood kitchen table could last for generations.
